Salvos Legal eagle flying high in Australian law

6 August 2012

Luke GearyThe founder and managing partner of Salvos Legal, Luke Geary, has been named the Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year at the Australian Law Awards. Not expecting to receive such a significant honour, Luke wasn’t at the ceremony in Melbourne to accept the award. Instead, he was at Uluru running the Australian Outback Marathon to raise money for a Salvation Army school in Africa!

Lauren Martin caught up with Luke as he travelled through the outback.

Congratulations, Luke! Tell me about the award…

Lawyers Weekly, a major legal magazine, recently held the Australian Law Awards. The award I won was the Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year Award. The award was contested on a national basis and I was one of a number of nominees, all of the others being from top tier national and international law firms (very much the big end of town).

What is your reaction to winning?

It's nice to have the work of Salvos Legal recognised on such a major national level, especially after only a year since our official launch. It is evidence that we are a significant player amongst the legal profession and are considered as good as, or perhaps in this instance even better than, the most expensive lawyers that money can buy!

How does winning this award better position Salvos Legal in the industry?

It demonstrates our emergence as the leading law firm for people in need, proving to our clients (both paying commercial clients and those in need) that their decision to use Salvos Legal as their lawyer means that they are in very good hands. It also raises our profile amongst the legal profession so that the best of the best lawyers who want to volunteer in providing pro bono work, know exactly where to come if they want to have the greatest opportunity of making a difference for those in need.

Salvos Legal has achieved so much in such a short space of time. What’s next?

Hopefully the rest of Australia and then the world!
