The Salvation Army and Macquarie University offer scholarship opportunity.

The Salvation Army, in partnership with Macquarie University, is offering scholarships to provide support for PhD students researching social justice, welfare and community services in The Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army scholarship aims to provide supports for PhD students researching on the area of social justice, welfare and community services in TSA Australia Eastern Territory. Up to four scholarships are offered through the Institute of Early Childhood in the Children and Families Research Centre (CFRC), Faculty of Human Sciences. Each scholarship will provide a total amount of $10,000 to each scholarship holder and may be offered as an individual award or a top-up scholarship. This scholarship also provides the opportunity for students to obtain ‘view from the field’ and/or gain practical experience in implementing intervention programs in community through various Salvation Army centres. Details of the projects will be developed by the Scholarship recipients and their supervisors in consultation with The Salvation Army.

Some possible research areas:

  • Financial hardships in Australia.
    Example: The impact of financial counselling on disadvantaged families.
  • Homelessness.
    Example: Early intervention program to prevent homelessness, underlying causes of homeless in Australia.
  • Community based program and/or parenting program for disadvantaged families.
    Example: Parenting and early childhood program for teenage parents and their children.
  • Income management and vulnerable families.
    Example: The impact of income management to vulnerable women.
  • Social exclusions in Australia.
    Example: Underlying cause of social exclusions among Welfare clients in the Salvation Army.
  • Mental health interventions.
    Example: Mental health intervention programs for men accessing the Salvation Army’s drop-off centres.
  • Other research area that would benefit disadvantaged communities and make positive contributions to The Salvation Army social services.
