Back to School for What About Tonight
Australian boy band, What About Tonight, will tour a number of schools this month to help The Salvation Army’s new Salvo Ambassadors raise awareness of youth homelessness.
Last month the members of What About Tonight toured The Salvation Army’s Oasis Youth Support Network (Oasis) and were deeply moved by the work being done there. “The people [at Oasis] were around my age,” remembers What About Tonight’s Luke Howell. “Not even having a house to go back to and not even having a proper shelter or food or jobs or anything – it hits home.
“It was full on.”
Keen to do more, What About Tonight partnered with the Salvo Ambassador Movement, which aims to “create the next generation of history makers by equipping, inspiring and empowering young people to lead at the forefront of social justice issues.” There are 31 Salvo Ambassadors in 17 schools across the Australia Eastern Territory.
What About Tonight will join the Ambassadors and make public appearances at dozens of schools in New South Wales and Queensland over the next two weeks. Students will be entertained by a live performance from the band, including the new single, Time of Our Lives, and hear about the issues surrounding youth homelessness during a Q&A with band members and a Salvo Ambassador.
The band is keen to promote Oasis’s The Couch Project – a fundraising and awareness campaign aimed at combating youth homelessness through raising awareness that couch surfing is the first step in the cycle of youth homelessness.
“We’re going to be going around and talking about The Couch Project,” says Luke. “If we can engage the students with our music and with The Couch Project stuff… it would be amazing just to see how much money we can raise to go towards it all.”
The Couch Project campaign culminates with a massive sleepover on 14 September where people from across Australia are encouraged to sleep on their couch to raise awareness around couch surfing and money for Oasis’s accommodation services.
