20 years of handing in the bacon
For Ean Pollard, the donation of pork to Sydney Streetlevel Mission’s Christmas Day lunch could be called a family tradition.
In 1994, Ean’s father, Ron Pollard, along with fellow pork farmers from around New South Wales, began the donation to the annual Christmas Day lunch. Twenty years on, Ean is now organising the donation of 270 kilos of pork for the same great cause.
Originally, farmers would donate a whole animal. But as farmers were located all over the state, logistics finally won out, and the donors decided to give money instead. The funds are used for buying and providing the best cuts of pork for the Christmas lunch.
Chairman of NSW Farmers Pork Committee and owner operator of a piggery in Young, Mr Pollard says the relationship that has formed between The Salvation Army, the farmers and their city colleagues, is one of equal recognition.
“The Streetlevel Mission is very supportive of the underprivileged in the community. We believe The Salvation Army is a very constructive organisation and very efficient,” says Mr Pollard.
“The donation has been very well supported by NSW pork producers over the years, and it’s very well accepted by The Salvation Army.”
Sydney Streetlevel Mission team leader Mitch Evans says both NSW Farmers Association and Australian Pork Ltd have been a wonderful support for the Sydney Streetlevel Mission’s Christmas day lunch for the past 20 years.
“It is through the generosity of donations such as this that we have an opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate Christmas – and to celebrate one another – as they connect with Sydney Streetlevel Mission this Christmas season,” says Mr Evans.
This year’s official pork handover will take place on 17 December at 11.30am at Sydney Streetlevel Mission in Surry Hills, where Mrs Margie Abbott, the Prime Minister’s wife, will be a special guest.
