Changes to our involvement in Manus Island and Nauru
The Salvation Army has confirmed its contract to provide humanitarian support services to adult asylum seekers in Manus Island and Nauru will not be renewed on a long-term basis beyond February 2014. Commissioner James Condon has written the following letter to the Territory concerning the changes to our involvement.
Dear Friends,
The Salvation Army has been informed by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection that our contract to provide humanitarian services in Manus Island and Nauru Offshore Processing Centres will not be extended on a long-term basis beyond February 2014.
I ask now that you join with me in praying that God’s hand will still be at work in protecting the Asylum Seekers housed in these centres. May He bring a swift resolution to their appeals and may they continue to feel His love throughout this experience.
We need also to pray for the staff of our Humanitarian Mission Service (HMS) who as a result of this contract ending may now need to find alternative employment. Our dedicated HMS team has worked hard since our involvement with offshore processing began and I am very proud of their efforts. May God continue to provide for them as they have answered His call to protect the humanity of vulnerable people.
Finally I ask that you pray for wisdom for our Government and for guidance for those who will assist in the Manus Island Nauru Offshore Processing Centres after our departure. Let their hearts remain open to the plight of the Asylum Seekers as they work on the best way to ensure their protection.
James Condon
Territorial Commander
The Salvation Army Australia Eastern Territory
