The Salvation Army’s Mount Isa Recovery Services has received a huge capital boost thanks to a Glencore community program.

Glencore is one of the world’s largest natural resources companies. It is providing a $118,000 grant to fund capital improvements to the 55-bed recovery service in Mount Isa.

The grant will provide a more efficient water collection, storage and reticulation system, a new solar power system and an assessment of the existing cooling systems for the building.

The Mount Isa service provides residential alcohol and other drugs treatment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, couples and families.

Salvation Army Mount Isa corps officer Lieutenant Bradley Whittle is chaplain to the recovery service.

“The major focus for us is to increase operational efficiency, and these improvements will help to significantly reduce the operating costs of the service,” says Lieutenant Whittle.

“We are honoured to be able to serve the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of north-western Queensland through the operations of the Mount Isa Recovery Services Centre. We’re seeking to be the best possible stewards of the funds for this much needed service.”

The Glencore Community Program North Queensland is funded through Glencore’s Copper Assets Australia. North Queensland Chief Operating Officer Mike Westerman says the program has invested almost $28 million in the region since 2005.

“We’re working in partnership with community organisations to address the areas of greatest need in the north Queensland communities where our employees live and work,” Mr Westerman says.

The Mount Isa Recovery Services centre supports people from the local area, as well as Mornington Island, Doomadgee, Normanton, and the Northern Territory.

“The Glencore support will help us implement our short-term capital improvement program and achieve a long-term sustainable outcome,” says Lieutenant Whittle.

“The Salvation Army in Queensland is very grateful for the continued partnership support we have received from Glencore for nearly eight years.”
