Hawkesbury Salvation Army has launched a Thursday night dinner and service, which is being called Hope Chapel.

The first Hope Chapel was held on Thursday 15 February with 38 people sitting alfresco-style around tables in the front courtyard of the corps, enjoying a steak-and-salad dinner. After dinner, everyone headed into the hall for a relaxed service with worship and a short message.

One of the features of the service was an “On the Couch” interview with Di Sweeney, who is the supervisor of Hawkesbury Salvation Army Hope Market that runs on Tuesdays. She spoke about why she volunteers and how she came to know and love Jesus.

Major Kaylene Morrice, the Corps Officer, spoke on the theme of honesty, basing her talk around the phrase “Let your yes be yes and your no be no”, taken from Matthew 5:33-37.

“It was an all-round great evening,”said Kim Taylor, Coordinator, Hawkesbury Hope Centre. “I would say the room was equally filled with Christians and non-Christians. It was God-honouring, it was community in every shape of the word.”

Kim said it was encouraging to see people attending through connections made at the corps’ Hope Centre.

“The aim of our Hope Centre is to do life with our community,”she said at the service. “Whether that is through the giving of food, helping to understand how to navigate the services in our community, just to sit and listen, have a coffee and a laugh, or at times share in tears. We are here to create a space for people to belong.

“Everyone should feel they belong; no one should feel alone. Everyone should be part of a community – this, here, is community. You are part of our community and we want to journey through life with you.”
