Australia is a multicultural nation. People from diverse cultures live throughout metropolitan and regional areas across the country. They may come to study, work, or to make Australia their new home. International students, seasonal workers, humanitarian settlers, and other new arrivals can face many challenges when settling in Australia. Many are at risk of isolation, exploitation and have limited access to support.
The offer of friendship from a friendly local can go a long way in helping new migrants form strong community connections and gain a sense of belonging as they create a life and home in Australia.
Started in NSW, this friendship initiative between Salvos and new arrivals has revealed how genuine connections based on the love of Jesus have transformed people’s lives both ways. The Welcome Project is now being expanded into other parts of Australia.
The Welcome Project is looking for Salvationists around the nation to welcome and be a friend to a new migrant to Australia and their family. It’s a great opportunity for everyday Salvos to engage in our mission with those who are new to Australia and searching for connection. All you need is a love for God and a love for people, so register your interest here for further details! You will be provided with an introduction to a new arrival and further support and help on the journey.
“Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God” Romans 15:7
