With the theme Live Life, Seniors Week in NSW and ACT (18 – 25 March) focuses on promoting a positive image of people over 55, highlighting and celebrating their many achievements.

Some of the 900 events on offer will focus on computer skills, travel, food, entertainment, and health. Whilst some will be free and others offered at a discounted price, the overall aim is for seniors to learn something new and meet new people.

The Salvation Amy Territorial Seniors Ministry Co-ordinator Major Lyn Daines knows the value of seniors in a corps and the contribution they make: “They have given a lot to The Salvation Army in their service and commitment and they continue to do it. Seniors are still working hard in their retirement, volunteering their time to ministry.”

Seniors Week has been recognised by The Salvation Army before, with corps holding special morning teas and dinners to celebrate seniors in their congregation. This year, The Salvation Army has been able to source 20 free tickets to the Premier’s Seniors Week Gala Concert. A number of representatives from different corps will be attending the concert this week.

Lismore Salvation Army will be celebrating Seniors Week on 25 March, with its seniors running the Sunday morning service, followed by a special morning tea in their honour. The corps’seniorsministry was founded in 2007 by Kelvin Elsley. “It allows those who would have very little fellowship from Sunday to Sunday to look forward to something. We only have a 21 seater bus, so it’s ‘first-in best-dressed!’ So many people want to go, including people from the community,” says Mr Elsley.

The corps bus has allowed them to take many day trips to locations across north New South Wales and south-east Queensland. Over the five years, they have taken day trips to beaches, farms, museums, and zoos, travelling as far as Australia Zoo and the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, north of Brisbane.

Seniors Week in Queensland will take place from 18 to 26 August this year. For more information on Seniors Week events in your area you can visit these websites. NSW- http://www.nswseniorsweek.com.au/ or ACT - http://www.cotaact.org.au/news/events/seniors-week-2012/

Tips for running a seniors ministry:

  • Hold monthly events.
  • Take a day trip on the corps bus or public transport(discounted travel!).
  • Have a night out - dinner or a movie.
  • Exercise – help build strength and balance.
  • Most importantly, do what appeals to your group. Get their opinion.
