Getting cold for a cause!

The Salvo Snow Mission Team are rugging up, ready to serve the people of the popular ski destination, Jindabyne, over the New South Wales school holiday period.

From 29 June until 13 July, 30 people will take part in the inaugural Salvo Snow Mission, with some attending for the full 2 weeks, and others coming for a few days. They will be running activities for kids and young people, preparing meals for people who ‘drop-in’, and getting out into the community in the streets and local parks.

There will be services held on each Sunday during the mission trip, involving worship, bible readings, and a short talk. Special guests for these services will include ACT & South NSW Divisional Commander Lt-Colonel Phil Cairns, Auburn Corps Officer, Captain Nesan Kistan,,and the Tuggeranong band.

Salvo Snow Mission Team Leader, Sue-Ellen Boss-Walker, says she really wants to show the people of Jindabyne that The Salvation Army are there to serve them; that we’re more than a charity asking for money.

“We’re not asking for money for anything at all; we’re just here to serve the community and serve the tourists,” says Sue-Ellen. “We want to show people who Jesus is; we’ll just be sharing little glimpses of Him throughout the day.”

Due to the numbers of volunteers being lower than expected, the Snow Mission has cut its program from a planned 24 hour service, to a 12 hour service – running from 10am to 10pm each day.

“Ideally we wanted a much bigger group...but God sent us amazing people and that’s fantastic,” says Sue-Ellen.

One person taking part in the mission trip is 18-year-old Erika Schmidt from Tuggeranong corps. She had been praying about doing a mission trip for some time, and with a love for the snow, she felt Salvo Snow Mission was a sign from God.

“The location and timing was perfect, so this must have been the mission trip that God had planned for me to attend,”says Erika.“I can’t wait to get out there and experience first-hand what it’s like to go on a mission trip, and most importantly to see how God uses the mission team to change and impact other people’s lives.”
