The Salvation Army’s work in Sydney’s Ryde City would not be possible without the continuous support of a dedicated group of volunteers. This year, they’re embarking on a Christmas Eve dinner to remember.

At nearby Macquarie University, a Salvos-inspired group referred to as the “Student Army”, together with some uni staff, is passionate about making a difference in the lives of people in their community.

The group’s major project is S.A.L.T (Seek Justice; Alleviate Hunger; Lift the Burden; Transform Lives), a food bank initiative that aims to provide a better place to live for residents of the Ivanhoe Place estate through the delivery of food from associated businesses at Macquarie University. The project has already helped a significant number of residents.

The initiative is coordinated by Dan Bofinger, a student at Macquarie University, with the help of a team of 15 volunteer students. The Student Army collects food from eight cafes at the end of each day, which is then distributed to families of The Salvation Army’s Number 47 Community Home at the Ivanhoe Place estate.

“We just think it’s really important to show love to people like Christ showed love to us” says Dan.

This year, The Salvation Army’s Number 47 Community Home’s Christmas Eve dinner will be sponsored by U@MQ (Campus life), supported by the Student Army and a number of supportive Macquarie University food suppliers.

“All of our retailers and suppliers have been generous,” says executive chef Peter Brewty. “The food donated will be prepared by our team of passionate chefs, creating a memorable traditional Christmas Eve dinner.”
