Tiba driven by passion to make a difference

14 December 2012

This Christmas, Tiba Ruda and other Salvation Army staff and volunteers will pack Christmas hampers with donated food items and toys for needy families in south-west Sydney.

They are expecting to help more than 100 families.

“We get a variety of people that we assist,” says Tiba. “It’s lovely to hear their stories and to help them at Christmas, which is such a special time of the year.”

Until this year, Tiba volunteered full-time at The Salvation Army in the Greater Liverpool area. She helped with administration at the Community Welfare Centre and also with whatever was needed at the nearby Warwick Farm Food 4 Life Market. It was a five-day a week commitment.

“I just love helping the people in my community,” she says. “I get satisfaction from knowing I am giving something back to my community.”

Tiba moved to the area in 2007 and found friends and community through The Salvation Army and Liverpool Neighbourhood Connections (previously the Warwick Farm Neighbourhood Centre).

“I got so much support when I first moved here, I wanted to give back,” she says. “I found friends and community through The Salvation Army.”

Now, after many years of volunteering, The Salvation Army has employed Tiba in finance and administration assistance.

“I love working at the Liverpool Salvation Army, because I work in a place where people care about the local community and are passionate about helping people who are less fortunate than them.”
