Kids across Queensland, NSW and ACT had their cameras out to capture what freedom meant to them in a recent Freedom photo competition.

The photo comp gave Salvation Army children of primary school age a chance to be part of the bigger Freedom Celebrations on 7 to 8 September.

A total of 40 quality photos were received, all of which were displayed at the Freedom Celebrations weekend, uniting children from across Australia.

Finding a winner was challenging, with exceptional photos sent in all round. But Ben Stephens, a 12-year-old from Dooralong, took out the top award with a snap of his little brother running across the top of a hill with a sun circle around him, capturing the essence of freedom.

“We wanted to try and involve as many of our corps as we could in the Freedom Celebrations,” explains Captain Roscoe Holland from the Children's Mission at The Salvation Army Australia Eastern Territory Headquarters.

“We asked: 'How are the kids from north Queensland or south NSW going to feel part of the bigger event?’ And we came up with the photo competition idea, so kids from anywhere could send their photos in to be displayed at the celebrations!”

“The Salvos is about people finding freedom, so we asked the kids to take photos of what they thought freedom looked like – of what freedom could be for them.

“The Freedom Celebration reminds our whole territory that we are about people finding freedom from physical and emotional situations, and about people finding freedom spiritually.

“The kids are getting this message of freedom now, and they’re helping others find freedom through Jesus Christ."
