The Sydney Boys High School ‘Class of 2013’ swapped water balloons and shaving cream fights for Salvation Army collection buckets as they raised funds for homeless and disadvantaged young people on Friday 13 September.

More than two hundred year 12 boys hit the streets in Sydney’s city centre, eastern suburbs, Burwood, Parramatta and Chatswood, as they traded in their ‘muck up day’ to collect money for their local charity – The Salvation Army’s Oasis Youth Support Network. The group raised more than $15,400 on the day.

“While many senior students celebrate their last day of school with a ‘muck-up day’ tradition, it’s inspiring to see these young men choosing to make a positive difference for others instead,” says Oasis Director, Major Keith Hampton.

“Through supporting our work with youth homelessness, this initiative is a great step for many of these young men, providing an opportunity to become a positive role model in their own communities.”

Continuing in the footsteps of seniors many years ahead of them, the young men stood at more than 20 locations across the city and eastern suburbs between 7.30am and 2pm to catch the commuters and shoppers.

Sydney Boys High School supports the boys’ community fundraising, and their efforts for Oasis have been significant. Over the last three years alone, the boys have raised more than $54,000 for Oasis’s work.

All funds raised on the collection day will go directly to the Oasis driving  program. This helps provides homeless and disadvantaged young people with the opportunity to secure their drivers’ license through free driving lessons, training and road safety workshops.
