Nova 96.9 Sydney breakfast radio hosts ‘Fitzy & Wippa’, and the Governor General Quentin Bryce visited bushfire affected Springwood, in the Blue Mountains, on Friday.

‘Fitzy & Wippa’ visited the recovery centre at the Springwood Baptist Church. They helped pack shelves with groceries and toiletries, and also helped cook and serve lunch for members of the community and the centre’s volunteers.

For Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli, seeing the organisation of the response so far was encouraging:

“Turning up here to see what’s been organised and how it’s running, it’s really impressive. There is such a great variation of people representing The Salvation Army, and it’s great to see the amount of people that have come running in to help. There’s a great community spirit.”

Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald says helping The Salvation Army was a priority for them.

“I think the number one thing that we thought of when we wanted to put our hand up was The Salvation Army.

“We’ve rocked up here today and to see the smile on people’s faces, I think that’s what gives you a real leg up and more confidence to come out and help. All these people have been affected, but everyone is so jovial, and they’re always looking to the positive things. It’s been a real eye-opener and I’m really glad we made the decision to come up here.”

Later in the day, Governor General Quentin Bryce visited another disaster welfare centre at the Springwood Presbyterian Church. She toured the centre, talking with emergency services personnel and those affected by the bushfires. She the made a statement to the public, praising the efforts of all those involved in the bushfire relief so far.

“What a wonderful experience it is for us to see this fantastic response to the bushfire disaster that has affected so many people in this beautiful part of this country. It’s professionally skilled, and it’s having a very uplifting effect on people who have a long road to recovery ahead of them. I’m very privileged to have the opportunity to say thank you to our volunteers, our emergency services people, our fire fighters, and to all the people who come in to respond in a very inspiring way.”
