Sunday 2 December saw the final Sunday roast for 2013 at Brisbane Streetlevel Mission. Joining us were hardworking volunteers from the Rotary Club of Brisbane Mid-City who helped with decorations and lights to turn Streetlevel into a Christmas wonderland, and then assisted with cooking and serving the meal.

Over 170 people enjoyed roast lamb with all the trimmings, and relaxed in our family atmosphere and the loving nature of our community.

This was our biggest Sunday roast since we began in February, with generous donations from OzHarvest and other donors making it all possible.

Guests for the Sunday roast came from the Streetlevel community, the local area including boarding houses and shelters, and the nearby Salvation Army Pindari Men’s and Women’s Services.

We also go out into the street in true Salvation Army style and invite people who are doing it tough to come in and have a meal with us.

One of the volunteers from the rotary club told me she had invited one guest in from the street, and then had the privilege to serve him his lunch.

During the meal, Ellie, a community member, shared her inspirational story from homelessness and addiction through to becoming a Salvation Army adherent at Streetlevel.

Many of the people who attended the lunch are sleeping rough but are starting to connect with Streetlevel and trying to find freedom from their struggle.

We give thanks and praise to God for this ministry and look forward to it growing in 2014.

On Christmas Day, Streetlevel is expecting up to 350 people to the Christmas dinner at 6pm.

Generous sponsors who want to remain anonymous are supplying all the food, drinks and trimmings for the dinner, including turkey, beef, mince pies and puddings.

The dinner will also feature celebrity chef Dominique Rizzo, live music, Santa and a local Fortitude Valley version of the nativity story.
