Twenty-one questions for the Army today
Captain Grant Sandercock-Brown’s book ‘21 questions for a 21st century Army: Being the Salvos now’ was launched last week in a small ceremony at Booth College Library.
The book is addressed at Salvationists, with each chapter exploring a different question, ranging from ‘Can I be a wealthy Salvationist?’ through to ‘What is the future for The Salvation Army?’
“The questions are really about our life and practices as Salvationists,” says Captain Sandercock-Brown, who is the Academic Program Officer at the School for Officer Training at Booth College.
In the book’s introduction, Captain Sandercock-Brown writes: “I hope that what I have to say is more than mere opinion. I have done my best to wrestle with each of these questions with Scripture as my starting point, Wesleyan theology as my compass, and my experience of Christ and his people in The Salvation Army as the context.”
Captain Grant first had the vision to write the book in 2009. The book is a collection of articles he has written, many originally published in the IHQ Officer magazine, on Salvation Army websites, and in sermons.
“While there is sometimes questions of theology and ecclesiology, my concern is always for what it means for our practice and our mission,” says Captain Sandercock-Brown.
“My reason for writing is to speak into the life of the Army. Hopefully this will start a conversation to talk about these topics.”
Booth College Principal, Major Peter Farthing, opened the launch, before Booth College lecturer and retired officer Major Alan Harley officially introduced the book.
The book is available from Booth College, or in all e-book formats. For more information, visit boothcollege.edu.au
