Eight keen Papua New Guinean runners, along with two Salvation Army officers, are getting set to compete in July’s Gold Coast Marathon.

The resilient runners are being mentored by personnel from the Australia Eastern Territory, including Commissioner James Condon, Lt Colonel David Godkin and Aged Care Plus CEO Sharon Callister. All of the mentors will be competing in the marathon also.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll meet the runners from Papua New Guinea and hear their stories.

Karogo Rotona – is set to be a leader

KarogoKarogo has the sporting ambition to represent Papua New Guinea in netball. Since completing her schooling, 23-year-old Karogo has completed a diploma in accounting, and now has her sights set on completing an advanced diploma in accounting.

This will be her first time travelling overseas, and she is grateful to God for allowing her this opportunity to take part in the event.

“From the whole experience, the most important thing that I want to learn is to be the person or leader who can overcome the challenges of life. No matter what happens, I will keep moving forward.”

“I also hope to learn how to run the Christian journey. What it is like, what is expected, and my time and commitment to God.”

Isaach Yasaking – likes running at his own pace

IsaachIsaach has been preparing for the marathon since the start of the year, running three times a day.

Aged 22, Isaach works in the glass and aluminium industry, but has a certificate in accounting. Isaach completed year 10 at school, and wants to continue studying until he has completed year 12.

The part that Isaach likes most about marathon running is being able to go at his own pace.

“I enjoy running because you can run fast or low. You run at your pace. That’s why I’m looking forward to running in the marathon,” says Isaach.

“I decided to run this marathon because it’s a sport for people who like to run. Whether they are young or old, they are doing it because they love to run and want to stay fit.”

“And I just have to run until I finish.”
