Salvos Legal was named inaugural ‘Law Firm of the Year’ at the Lawyers Weekly Australia Law Awards last Friday.

Luke Geary, Salvos Legal Managing Partner, along with three other partners and Salvos Legal chaplain Major Susan Reese, accepted the award on the night.

It’s the first year the ‘Law Firm of the Year’ category has been included, making Salvos Legal the award’s first-ever recipient.

National and international law firms nominated in the same category were quick to extend their congratulations on the night.

“We’re often talked about in various law circles about the work that we do and the uniqueness of what we do, so it was good to have them come up to us on the day, ” says Mr Geary.

“The award we won was not a refined category. It was a competition against every law firm in the country as well as several from overseas who have merged with Australian law firms. So I think that says something about the scope of the competition.”

Salvos Legal was nominated by Peter Juchau, Head of Retail Facilities Management and Operations, Group Property Financial Services at the Commonwealth Bank.

“What greater law firm could there be than an organisation which has access to justice, and not personal commercial gain, as the sole reason for its existence?” Mr Juchau said in his nomination.

Twin firms Salvos Legal and Salvos Legal Humanitarian began in late 2010, making the award an even more remarkable achievement.

“I think the award validates the fact that you don’t have to be doing the same thing that everyone else has done since the beginning of time to be successful,” says Mr Geary.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Geary acknowledged the unique work of Salvos Legal within the law profession.

“I’m convinced Salvos Legal is the best law firm because everyone is unashamedly enthusiastic about making money – nowhere else is that possible without notions of greed and self-interest coming in to play. Here, it is all done benevolently and graciously, for the greater good.”

William Kontaxis, Elizabeth Lathlean and Genevieve Woods were nominated for their work with Salvos Legal in other categories.
