City shoppers opt for Salvos pop-up op shop
Salvos Stores celebrated National Op Shop Week with a pop-up store in the city centre of Sydney.
For a whole day on 25 August, Sydneysiders were able to shop for recycled clothes at Salvos Stores' “Salvonista” mobile van, which was set up in Martin Place.
All proceeds went towards running The Salvation Army’s programs that assist the less fortunate.
Neville Barrett, Salvos Stores General Manager, said by shopping at Salvonista or Salvos Stores, people were also helping the environment by reducing landfill.
“The economy is impacting the broader community. People from a wider socio-economic background are now shopping at Salvos Stores,” he said.
“We’ve seen a 75 per cent increase in our business in the past 10 years and that tells us that the community is both donating to and shopping at Salvos Stores and helping the environment by reducing landfill.”
National Op Shop Week is a joint initiative of DoSomething! and the National Association of Charitable Recycling Organisations (NACRO).
Salvos Stores partnered with NACRO during Op Shop Week to help raise awareness about the importance of supporting op shops in local Australian communities.
“Charity op shops are integral to the fabric of Australian society. We love to know that items we donate will be put to good use and that the proceeds from our purchases go to help others in the community,” said Kerryn Caulfield, NACRO Chief Executive Officer.
Along with a pop-up store was a free breakfast, followed by a fashion show at lunch. Seven models showcased vintage and recycled fashions trends found at a local Salvos Store, styled by Salvos Ambassador Faye De Lanty.
“I am beyond passionate about showing people how their sartorial choices can help to save the planet. Reuse, reinvent and reduce your fashion footprint,” she said.
