The Salvation Army is a child-safe organisation and provides an environment that is safe and inclusive for children and young people - where they feel safe, respected, valued and encouraged to reach their full potential. As we strive to create a safe environment for children and young people, we do the same for those we work with and journey alongside. As a volunteer, your role is vital in creating and maintaining an environment where all people are safe and free from harm.

The basic building blocks of creating a safe environment starts with well-trained and informed people. The Salvation Army's mandatory training courses have been designed to equip all personnel with the knowledge and skills needed to complete their role safely, keep a safe environment and protect the most vulnerable.

Note:

  • You will need to know your 'Salvos Workday ID' to access training - please contact your line manager if you do not have this. 
  • If you are unsure what training you need to complete, please first discuss with your corps officer/line manager
  • Only volunteers and retired officers are to use VLP; employees and officers are to complete their training via LEARN

Mandatory Training for Volunteers

This section of learning is for volunteers who do not lead or manage others or work with children and/or vulnerable people. 

As an organisation dedicated to the safety and wellbeing of all our people, as a volunteer, you play an important role in creating this environment. You will need to complete the following

Course Name

Description 

Mandatory Site Induction

Prior to commencing your role, your corps officer/line manager will provide you with a thorough site induction. This site induction will cover:

  • The Salvation Army Code of Conduct 
  • Work, Health and Safety 
  • Information relating to your role
  • Information relating to your workplace 

This time is a great opportunity to ask any questions you may have.  

Safeguarding@TSA  

Safeguarding@TSA is a national 30-minute course that provides vital information about our responsibilities for ensuring TSA is a child-safe organisation.  

Safeguarding@TSA replaces the following courses

  • Keeping Children Safe
  • Safe Salvos 

Things to note:

  • If you have previously completed any of the above 2 courses and your training is still current, you do not need to complete Safeguarding@TSA until your training has expired. 
  • New volunteers will need to enrol and complete this training within 4 weeks of commencing your volunteer role.

This section is for volunteers who work with children and/or vulnerable people but do not lead or manage others.

As a volunteer who works with children and/or vulnerable people, you have both a privilege and responsibility. You play a crucial role in protecting children and vulnerable people, and the training below will equip you with what you must know.

Safeguarding Principles Training

Safeguarding Principles training is owned and developed by the Australian Childhood Foundation (ACF). It consists of 10 modules and provides general information about the principles of Child-safe organisations. 

Getting started

  • You will need an enrolment key before launching the course. Please contact your corps officer/line manager for an enrolment key if you do not have one. 

Things to note:

  • If you have completed SP3 and Safe Salvos and it is still current, you will not need to complete this until that training is expired. 
  • New volunteers will need to enrol and complete this training within 4 weeks of commencing your volunteer role.

This section is for volunteers who are in leadership roles or manage others. Examples include Corps Sergeant Major, Store Managers, Program Team Leaders etc.

Volunteers who lead people or programs have additional responsibilities and need to be well equipped to help build and develop their team. As a leader in the organisation, the following training will help give you the tools, skills and knowledge to perform your role with confidence.

Building Healthy Communities (WHS)

All volunteers who lead people must watch these short videos to ensure they have the needed knowledge and information to create safe and healthy work environments. There will be three modules you'll need to complete. All three modules are available via the 'launch course' button below. 

1. WHS - Manual Handling (20 minutes)

To increase your awareness of hazardous manual tasks and develop your understanding of how to prevent an injury, we have developed this course.

2. Zero Tolerance - Bullying and Harassment (20 minutes)

This course has been designed to increase your awareness of what is considered bullying and occupational violence and describes your responsibilities regarding such behaviours.

3. Zero Tolerance - Discrimination and Equal Opportunity (24 minutes)

This course has been designed to provide you with an overview of our organisation's policies and your legal obligations relating to equal opportunity.
