A key focus for the Volunteer Resources team in 2025 is raising the voice of our volunteers to be equal contributors to The Salvation Army mission and movement. This initiative forms part of Volunteer Resources Strategic Action Plan 2023-2026.
The actions identified to support this initiative are to:
continue gathering volunteer sentiment and feedback via the Onboarding and Exit Surveys
Volunteers currently rely on their line manager to be kept informed about organisational matters, information, and actions relevant to them. Whilst this fosters a strong working relationship between volunteers and their managers, unfortunately, this reliance creates the risk of patchy, inconsistent communications with volunteers, where some volunteers may be missing out on information altogether. Additionally, this approach has limited interaction between the organisation and volunteer, essentially because it is one-way / top-down.
The Volunteer Voice initiative is to remedy this inconsistency by creating a two-way approach to communicating between TSA and its volunteers, so there is better engagement, involvement and insight for all concerned.
Due to the limited organisational-wide communication with volunteers, the only evidence we have on what is interesting, meaningful and matters most to volunteers, as well how they wish to be communicated with, is via the Supplementary Survey launched alongside the first Volunteer Engagement Survey in September 2023. This Supplementary survey received around 800 responses.
Using the insights gathered from consultation with stakeholders, the Volunteer Resources team will determine implementation actions and their priority level.
