A rainy Brisbane day didn't stop more than 500 people coming along to the annual Carindale Fun Day on 23 August.
There was something for everyone, with jumping castles, dunking machines, gladiator duel, fairy floss, a coffee and pizza van, petting zoo, Family Story pop-up shop and food and beverage stalls. A tea tent provided a place for parents to sit back and enjoy some high tea while enjoying the entertainment on offer.
The local dance academy, the school band, and the Carindale Corps brass band, timbrels, junior timbrels and kids band were some of the acts.
Kerryn Ivers, who helped co-ordinate the day with Rhiannon John, said they were “blown away” by the support of the Carindale Corps and volunteers.
“We were so blessed by the support of everyone there with a happy smiley face despite the rain. They really were spreading the love of Jesus through their actions and their attitude toward the day,” Kerryn said.
“It is about getting out there and letting people know what we do here – both The Salvation Army as a whole and what we do for our community.”
The first Fun Day was held in 2010, but this year was the first held at Mt Gravatt East State School. Previously, the event had been held in a local park.
Angela Schreiweis, from the school's P&C group, said the school was honoured to host The Salvation Army.
“Whilst the weather was not as we had hoped, it didn't deter the community from coming along to see what the Salvation Army had to offer, whether it was the Family Store, a family day out or just seeing a friendly face. I personally loved being a part of it,” Angela said.
Other highlights included an interview with local councillor Krista Adams and a presentation from the State Emergency Services about storm safety.
Carindale's corps officer, Major Michele Terracini, said events like the Fun Day were at the heart of the corps mission, with planning for next year's event already underway.
“Our corps vision is to be a worshipping community, doing whatever it takes to bring people to Jesus Christ,” Major Terracini said.
