Transforming Australia - Thursday 8 August

Thursday 8 August, 2019

Putting an end to rough sleeping

This week is Homelessness Week and as The Salvation Army we believe one person sleeping rough is one too many. Livia Carusi, General Manager of Homelessness talks about how it is well within our capacity as a nation to end it. You can also view The Salvation Army video for Homelessness Week here.

Teaching WA kids about homelessness

The Salvo Schools Program in WA engages with more than 15,000 students annually, from Busselton to Geraldton, educating them and helping them empathise with homeless Australians. Read more about the program here.

Preparing for One Way

As part of The Salvation Army’s ‘One Way’ program, the way that we manage our ‘people processes’ like recruitment, role changes, leave, payslips, etc. is being transformed.

Many of those changes will occur over the next few months with the introduction of Salvos Workday, which will replace the 26 disparate, disconnected systems that are in currently in use across the organisation. You can learn more about Salvos Workday here.

Resources, detailing key changes, impacts and benefits, specifically designed for Employees, Managers and Officers, will be distributed over the coming weeks.
For more information, speak to your HR Business Partner or Officer Personnel Secretary.

Prayer room update

The August 2019 prayer room resources for Thursday prayers are now available, subjects include the Army’s work in central Queensland, north-east country Victoria, the northern-metropolitan area of Perth, and the Northern Territory. The Prayer Room is published on the Bulletin Board.

Be part of the innovation

The Salvation Army has a strong legacy of being pioneers and bringing hope where it is needed most.

Innovation starts with great ideas and from late September, you will be able to submit yours through an new platform called “Salvos:IDEAS”.

The new platform will be accessible to everyone, giving you an opportunity to take a great idea from ideation right through to implementation. Ideas that we hope will support the achievement of our mission, ideas that will ultimately help shape the future of The Salvation Army. Read more about the current innovation grants.

Email innovation manager Greigory Whittaker at greigory.whittaker@salvationarmy.org.au for more information.

Connecting with the past

The Salvation Army Territorial Museum in Melbourne opened its doors for the Open House Melbourne event hosted at the end of July.

Over 500 people visited the Limelight Studio, Australia’s first registered Film production company. Back in 1900, The Salvation Army produced the first moving picture in Australia, “Soldiers of the Cross” and our professional film studio continues to provide new ways of bringing God’s message to the people of Australia.

Museum Manager Lindsay Cox said the visitors were ‘introduced to the Army in a way they never expected’, the magic of the movies and drama, ‘and they learnt something of our God-given mission.’

The Salvation Army has two museums. Melbourne Museum is located at 69 Burke Street and is open Mon- Fri 9.30-3.30pm and first Saturday of every month.

The Sydney Museum is located at 32a Barnsbury Grove, Bexley North and is open Mon-Sat 9am-2pm.

Help people live life to the fullest

The Salvation Army’s annual Australasian exploration of theology, the Thought Matters Conference, is occurring from 23-25 August at Eva Burrows College at 100 Maidstone Street, Ringwood, Vic. (registrations close on Friday, 16 August).

Salvationists from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and Samoa will share papers on the concepts of ‘vocation, calling, identity and faith’, as they relate to people flourishing. Click here for more information and to register.
