Call to the Islands

Call to the Islands

The Salvation Army is urging Salvationists, officers and staff with the skills and availability for a mission secondment to off-shore asylum processing facilities on Manus Island or Nauru.

“We are urging people who have the availability, qualifications and a heart for mission to asylum seekers to apply for a term of service,” says The Salvation Army’s Territorial Mission and Resource Director – Social, Major Paul Moulds.

The Salvation Army needs to fill the following positions immediately:

  • Case work staff
  • Client Activity Staff
  • Cultural Advisory Staff (Proficient in languages such as Tamil, Bari, Farsi, Hazara, Rohohimgya, Arabic)
  • Administration staff
  • Education Staff (Vocational and those able to teach English)

Successful applicants will be away for up to four weeks.

“This will not be an easy task,” says Major Moulds. “Conditions on the island are fairly basic, and infrastructure undeveloped.

The Salvation Army’s human resources department says salary and conditions are currently being negotiated and more details will be available shortly. They have released an application form for those interested – it is available on the AUE Bulletin Board or by contacting the human resources department.

The Salvation Army has put in place a Field Operations Coordinator in Nauru who will direct all mission activities, but no structure is in place at this stage, as the situation is still described as being in ‘critical response mode’.

For people unable to travel to Nauru or Manus Island there is an urgent need for prayer over the new mission.

“We ask all Salvationists and employees to prayerfully consider their availability and to pray and intercede for our first staff team who left Australia this week, and the many who will follow them,” says Major Moulds.

“Please pray for the asylum seekers who will be placed in our care, that they might find a home and experience safety and hope while they wait the outcome of their applications for asylum.”

If you are interested in serving in Nauru or Manus Island, contact the human resources department by email.

  1. Hi, I'm wondering if there is still a need for volunteers as 'Call to the Islands' run last year. Will there be another round? I am a Por Bono Registered Migration Agent and a Qualified ESL teacher. I'd be really grateful if someone got back to me on the email address provided above.
