Ms Joanna Gash, Mayor of the City of Shoalhaven and Federal Member for Gilmore, officially opened The Salvation Army’s Shoalhaven Corps Bay and Basin Mission, an outpost on the South Coast of NSW, on 2 June.

The Shoalhaven Corps attended the opening, with the band providing music for the event. The Salvation Army Emergency Services sizzled sausages for members of the local community, and the Sanctuary Point Men’s Shed came along to the opening.

“The Shoalhaven Corps and ACT & South NSW Division have had a vision for a plant down in this area for around 15 years, so it’s wonderful to see the realisation of this vision,” says Lieutenant Alice Folan-Foley, Mission Leader. Lieut Alice has been serving as the Assistant Corps Officer at the Shoalhaven Corps for four years.

The Salvation Army Shoalhaven Corps had an outpost in this area many years ago, but unfortunately this had to be closed.

The Mission will provide welfare two days a week, a Positive Lifestyle program and Moneycare one day a week and, from August, a weekly ladies group, Bible study and church service.

Final approvals for the opening of the family store are also near completion.

“We have seen such an increase in need for welfare and general services, especially as this area has been growing,” said Lieut Alice.

The local council, community, and St Vincent de Paul who are next door, have welcomed and supported The Salvation Army opening its Mission.

“St Vincent de Paul is looking forward to working together with us to help build and serve this community,” says Lieut Alice.

“Many people who previously came to the Army outpost before it closed have also asked when church will start again!

“It’s fantastic that the Mission has opened and we can begin to meet the huge need here. This past weekend we celebrated the seed being planted in this community, and we will watch as it takes ground and grows according to God’s will and way.

The Bay and Basin Mission services the Jervis Bay and St Georges Basin region of the City of Shoalhaven.
