The Mackay Corps was joined by families from Mainly Music in Mackay and nearby Marian, as well as J.A.M. (Jesus and Me), to celebrate 125 years of The Salvation Army in the town.

During the celebration service Mackay Corps Officers, Lieutenants Jeff and Terri Goodwin, opened the time capsule that was put in place in 1988 to mark 100 years of The Salvation Army in Mackay. The treasures inside included letters from families who then worshipped at the corps, some holiness messages on cassette tape, an old Salvation Army flag, and personal messages to the corps officers.

Lieutenant Jeff then spoke about the past, the present, and the future. “We all have a past – our pasts have good and fond memories and also hurtful ones,” he said.

“God wants us not to live in and be caught up in the hurts and mistakes of the past, but to move on to the future he has planned for all of us.

“As Jeremiah 29:11 says: ‘We can use the past hurts if it will help someone in the present, but we cannot dwell on the mistakes of yesterday.’”

A free barbecue gave everyone the opportunity to continue the celebration after the service.
