Major Deborah Robinson admits she can’t bake to save herself. So when God prompted her to start a baking ministry at her Parramatta Corps in Sydney’s west, she knew she needed help.

“A call out to all my Parra salvos who like to bake and bless others,” she posted on Facebook.

“Feeling inspired to commence a ministry where we meet together in the church kitchen, spend the morning baking (so not me, will need help!). Then we wrap our baking in an amazing 'Pinterest' kinda way and then we deliver the goods to those in our community like the local school teachers.”

The response to Major Robinson’s post was instant – and overwhelming. Within a few weeks, the first ‘Bake to Bless’ event took place, with a group of women from the corps coming together to decorate pre-baked cupcakes, box and tag them for delivery.

“We prayed as we prepared the cupcakes, decorated them and wrote on the gift-tags that whoever receives this particular one would experience a little of the love of Jesus,” says Major Robinson.

The first cupcakes were created for a group of special needs teachers who accompany their students to The Salvation Army Parramatta’s music therapy classes every Monday.

“They were really shocked and then you could just see the sense of, they were really surprised and chuffed,” she says.

“But the comment that just blew me away was when one of the teachers said: ‘The Salvation Army doesn’t thank us, we’re meant to thank The Salvation Army for what you do! You’re the one putting on the music therapy program for our kids – we thank you.’

“And I just said, ‘Well, that’s great and we appreciate that, we just wanted to acknowledge the work that you do in our community with these children. We wanted to bless you this morning and give you a cake and acknowledge what you do.’”

Major Robinson says the Bake to Bless ministry is about forming intentional connections with people in the local area, showing love to them and acknowledging their vital contributions to the community.

“It’s also created opportunities for people [in Parramatta Corps] with different gifts to be involved in ministry,” she says.

And what part did she play in the Bake to Bless ministry?

“I assembled the gift boxes!” she laughs.
