Primary school ‘adopts a family’ for Christmas

A Sunshine Coast primary school is supporting 24 families in need this Christmas through the Caloundra Salvation Army Christmas Appeal.

Currimundi Primary School placed a basket in each of the school's 24 classrooms as part of a hamper drive and were able to present 24 hampers to The Salvation Army.

Captain Stuart Glover, the Caloundra Corps Officer, said the hampers would be given out to families in need through the Adopt-A-Family program.

The program, which covers the Sunshine Coast, allows participants to select one family they want to support through the donation of food and other items.

“The community actually gets involved in providing the donation and they know the family that it is going to is, for example, a single mum with three kids,” said Captain Glover. “It’s great to see the community getting on board and supporting others in the area. It shows the value in creating relationships with people in the community.”

The hamper drive was organised by Di Mesa, who is the school chaplain, and Alice Taylor-Tighe, a mother on the school’s P&C who has also attended Mainly Music at The Salvation Army for the past three-and-a-half years.

“Wherever I can I try to give back in the community because I know it is such an important thing. I’m really lucky. I’ve got an amazing marriage and family, but I know there are people out there in different circumstances,” Alice said.

Currimundi Primary School acting principal Corrie Connors said the students and their families had a great sense of community and were more than happy to assist The Salvation Army.

“Throughout the year The Salvation Army has supported Currimundi school and we see our partnership with The Salvation Army as a way in which we can continue to achieve our school vision ‘riding the waves to success’. We hope to now support our local community on an annual basis with Christmas hamper support,” Corrie said.

The hampers were handed over during the school's final assembly of the year.
