From Kings Cross to Parkes: Envoy Rosemary Richardson’s new role
For the last four years Envoy Rosemary Richardson worked on the streets of Sydney, taking hot drinks and blankets to homeless young people at night. It’s a far cry from Rosemary’s new role as Chaplain at Rosedurnate Aged Care Plus Centre but she says it’s all for the same purpose: “It’s being a stable person in peoples life; being available to listen and be there when you are needed.”
Rosemary says working in aged care feels miles from the young people she grew to know in the city: “It’s a new season for me. The age gap in clients and completely different circumstances was a bit to take in but I love a challenge.
“People here have lost their choice in a way, but just because you are old doesn’t mean you don’t deserve dignity and respect. That’s the similarity between here and the disadvantaged teenagers in Kings Cross.”
Whatever challenge she is faced Rosemary says she does in the love of God to help others. “It is very fulfilling work and quite busy with chapel services, resident outings, activities, and pastoral care,” says Rosemary.
Centre Manger Steven Barnard says Rosemary has quickly become a good friend and advocate to residents and staff at Rosedurnate Aged Care Plus Centre. “She has bought with her invaluable knowledge and an understanding and exuberance that our residents just love.
“Rosemary’s focus is on the unique social, spiritual and pastoral needs of each resident. She has become a great companion to many people.”
“I have been so welcomed by everyone here,” says Rosemary who loves to sit and chat with each resident. “Everyone has a story and I love to hear each of them, we spend a lot of time sharing and talking.
I’m a country girl at heart,” says Rosemary, “I’m very at home here!”
