Australian actress, singer and model Sophie Monk says her family connection to The Salvation Army is behind her decision to support this year’s Red Shield Appeal.

Earlier this week, Sophie, on her day off from co-hosting the Fifi and Jules show on the Austereo radio network, delighted young people at The Salvation Army’s Oasis Youth Support Network in inner-Sydney with a visit.

“It was probably one of the most beautiful days off ever,” she said after her tour of the Youth Support Network and the Army’s Foster House refuge for homeless men.

“I can’t believe the people that I met and some of the children … we had a jam session and sang and it is just so sweet seeing them.”

Sophie revealed that her grandmother used to work for The Salvation Army and it’s that connection that has made her a passionate supporter.

“The Salvation Army has helped a lot of people in my family – my grandmother worked for The Salvation Army too and that’s why it’s so special to me,” she said.

“Also, I donated [to The Salvation Army] some of the money [she won] on Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

Sophie will continue to raise awareness of The Salvation Army throughout the Red Shield Appeal.

The Red Shield Appeal Doorknock will be held over the weekend of the 25-26 May. To register as a volunteer log onto salvos.org.au/doorknock or call 13SALVOS.
