Christmas testimonies: Hilton

Hilton Harmer and his wife, Joyce, have been Salvation Army officers (ministers) for 51 years.

They have served in a variety of roles across the Army’s Australia Eastern Territory (NSW, Queensland and the ACT) including leading churches, as well as ministering to people in rehabilitation centres and at courts.

In 2007, both Hilton and Joyce were awarded the Order of Australia Medal. Now retired, they continue to be active, ministering to the unchurched of society and occasionally visiting correctional centres and law courts.

For Hilton and Joyce, Christmas has always been about trying to “bless” the community they are ministering too.

“For years we went around the city [Sydney] bringing cheer to the homeless with music and a gift and praying for their loved ones whom they may have been missing,” says Hilton. “Last year we went around the boarding houses that we visit in Sydney, and that is what we will do again this year.”

Hilton says it was a privilege to be able to represent The Salvation Army in the Christmas television commercial.

“I felt honoured to be with people who had found ‘freedom’ through Jesus, via The Salvation Army.”
