Humanitarian Mission Services - a message from Sharon Callister

Humanitarian Mission Services' Chief Executive Officer, Sharon Callister, has issued the following message to Salvationists sharing a new resource for those interested in the work taking place on Nauru and Manus Island.

Dear friends,

Since September 2012, The Salvation Army Humanitarian Mission Services (previously known as Offshore Mission) has been providing humanitarian support services to asylum seekers in Nauru and Manus Island Regional Processing Centres (RPCs).

With the recent negative media coverage concerning the Manus Island and Nauru Regional Processing Centres (RPCs), it could be easy to overlook the important mission work that The Salvation Army is doing in there. I thought this would be a good opportunity therefore to outline our role in offshore processing and the work we are doing with asylum seekers.

I am pleased to share with you our new website which contains information about our mission, educational videos and information fact sheets. Also available are serving opportunities in Nauru and Manus Island RPCs.

This website and content aims to inform you of the ministry of Humanitarian Mission Services, our work in offshore processing and the purpose behind it.

Our mission in the RPCs, 100% funded by the Australian government is currently undertaken by 250 dedicated staff working for Humanitarian Mission Services. Their primary concern is with supporting the welfare, emotional, and spiritual well-being of over 500 asylum seekers. They also provide case management, educational and recreational activities, as well as counselling and pastoral care.

Major Annette West is our Director of Mission and Personnel ensuring Humanitarian Mission Services remains true to the mission, vision and values of The Salvation Army.

Please feel free to share this information with your friends, family, colleagues, respective Corps and Centres.

I would ask you please pray for Humanitarian Mission Services and this vital mission and ministry we are undertaking. It is only through prayer and hard work that we can bring hope and fulfil our mission.

If you have any questions, please contact our Communications Department on +61 2 9779 9411 or email at salvoshms@aue.salvationarmy.org.

Yours sincerely,

Sharon Callister
Chief Executive Officer
Humanitarian Mission Services
