Miriam sees rich reward in new PNG role
“God gave me a very clear word – ‘Man will think it is too hard, but you watch what I do’,” says Lieutenant-Colonel Miriam Gluyas, Territorial Secretary for Program, in response to her new appointment as Chief Secretary of the Papua New Guinea Territory. “I believe him.”
Lieut-Colonel Gluyas will assist the PNG Territorial Commander with the efficient oversight and direction of the Army’s work in the country. Her appointment is effective from 1 February next year.
Over the past 18 years, the PNG Territory has trebled in size. More than 3000 children now attend Salvation Army schools and people are praying and believing.
“Now that excites me,” says Lieut-Colonel Gluyas. “The rewards of this appointment will be in seeing what God does; in seeing people come to Christ and grow in their relationship with him. I also believe that leaders will be developed, that we will address issues of poverty and justice, and that we will see a nation rise up, a holy people. I can believe for revival. All of that is reward enough.”
Lieut-Colonel Gluyas is looking forward to serving alongside the people of PNG, learning from them, listening to them and being able to bring some resources to assist them.
“There is not too much that I am not looking forward to,” she says. “It's a new adventure with God and he always has something new. That's good.”
Serving overseas will also bring its challenges, and Lieut-Colonel Gluyas believes that adventures with God are usually both exciting and scary.
“The greatest challenge for me will be leaving family, friends and a ministry that I love, she says.
“I have always seen myself as a missionary in Australia. Australia needs Jesus.
“Leaving is always the most difficult thing for me in any appointment, as I love people. I will miss the freedom of going where I want to, when I want to.”
Lieut-Colonel Gluyas is confident that any challenges and difficulties will help deepen her reliance on God and trust in him.
“And PNG is not that far away,” she adds. “I will be coming home for family weddings and my Nana’s 100th birthday. Family is so important to me!”
